The Dervish Giróvagos, also known as Mevlevids, are members of an Islamic Sufi order founded in the 13th century in the city of Konya, in modern-day Turkey. Their name comes from their distinctive practice of the whirling dance, known as the 'Sema', which is considered a form of meditation and worship.
During the Sema ceremony, dervishes spin slowly around themselves while listening to music and reciting prayers. Their traditional dress includes a long white robe, a tall hat called a 'sikke' and a wide cloak known as a 'tennure'. The whirling dance symbolises the movement of the planets in the solar system and is considered a way of reaching a state of spiritual ecstasy.
Don't miss this opportunity to learn about the traditions and cultures of one of the oldest religious orders in Islam, in a spectacle full of beauty and fun.
