Step by Step
This tour descends into the bowels of Turin, giving you the opportunity to discover the hidden side of the capital of Piedmont. An experienced guide will accompany you through the intricate labyrinth of tunnels and underground passages of the historic centre. The tour lasts approximately 3 hours and passes through the main places of interest, such as:
- Infernotti: large cellars used to store wine and foodstuffs. They are carved in sandstone and were used as hideouts for exiles and outlaws, meetings of secret societies and mysterious encounters. They also served as air-raid shelters during World War II.
- Museo Pietro Micca: In 1706, French troops were besieging Turin and capitulation seemed imminent. Only the sacrifice of a miner, Pietro Micca, saved the city. He detonated a mine in a tunnel, blocking the advance of the troops. This museum pays tribute to his heroic deed.
- Ghiacciaie di Piazza Emanuele Filiberto: huge spaces built between 1500 and 1700 to store snow and ice.
- Cimitero di San Pietro in Vincoli: a sober-looking cemetery, inactive since the 19th century. A crypt lies beneath the surface and some swear to have seen the ghost della velata, the lost soul of a young woman who died in the 18th century.
The route is not particularly complicated and can be done by the general public. In any case, it is preferable to wear comfortable shoes and clothes.
