Step by Step
With the purchase of a ticket, you will gain access to this unique place that houses more than 7,000 musical instruments from all over the world. The museum owes its birth to Robert J. Ulrich, former CEO of Target Corporation, who was inspired by the Museum of Musical Instruments in Brussels (Belgium). It is made up of different environments, such as:
- Geographic Galleries: the galleries explore five macro-zones of the planet: Africa and the Middle East, Asia and Oceania, Europe, Latin America and the Caribbean, the United States and Canada. The highlight of the collection is probably the world's largest sousaphone, a type of tuba created by the American composer John Philip Sousa.
- Artist Gallery: The instruments of the most virtuoso musicians are preserved here: Johnny Cash, Carlos Santana, John Lennon and many others.
- Mechanical Music Gallery: So-called"mechanical music" is actually very old, with the earliest examples dating back to the 3rd century BC. The museum has some examples: pianos, mechanical zithers and music boxes.
Take the Piestewa Freeway (SR 51) to Loop 101 and exit at Tatum Boulevard (4725 E. Mayo Boulevard). Free parking is available at the museum.
