Declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1984, the historic centre of Cordoba is one of the most visited in Spain, and has many iconic places to visit, among them:

  • Plaza de Las Tendillas: This square is located in the centre of the city and dates back to the 14th century. It owes its name to the shops that were located there, owned by the commanders of the Order of Calatrava.
  • Plaza de la Corredera: Built in the 17th century, it is theonly quadrangular main square in the whole of Andalusia. Its name comes from the bullfights that were held in the square, although it was also known for being where some of the executions of the Spanish Inquisition took place.
  • Roman Bridge: It was built during the rule of Emperor Augustus and, for twenty centuries, it was the only bridge in the city. It is 331 metres long, 9 metres wide, and is supported by a total of 16 arches.
  • Alcázar de los Reyes Cristianos: Castle built by Alfonso XI in 1328. It was built on the ruins of the Alcazar of the Umayyads, and served as the residence of the Catholic Monarchs during the War of Granada. After the victory in the war, Emir Boabdil, the last Muslim ruler of the Iberian Peninsula, was imprisoned in its cells.
  • Cordoba Mosque Cathedral: Built in the 8th century by Abderraman I, it was the second largest mosque in the world for 8 centuries, second only to Mecca. In the 16th century, it was also surpassed in size by the Blue Mosque in Istanbul.

A good way to get to know Cordoba, in a relaxed way and with the explanations of the guide, who, while driving the tuk tuk, told us everything important about the areas we were passing through.
