Step by Step

This ticket will allow you to visit the Reina Sofía Art Centre, one of the best contemporary art museums in the world. You will have access to the permanent collection as well as temporary exhibitions.

The cultural centre is located in the heart of the capital, just a stone's throw from Atocha train station and a few minutes' walk from the Prado, Caixa Forum and Thyssen-Bornemisza museums. The Estación del Arte metro station (L1) and the numerous bus lines that stop nearby make it easy to travel from any part of the city.

The Reina Sofía is divided into two parts: the older part dates from the 18th century and was the former General Hospital of Madrid. The newer part was designed by British architect Ian Ritchie and opened in the 1990s.

The museum houses numerous masterpieces of contemporary art, the most famous of which is Picasso's Guernica. The work was painted to be exhibited at the International Exhibition in Paris in 1937, at the height of the Civil War, and bears witness to the bombing of the Basque town of the same name. The Malaga-born artist was impressed by this tragic episode and drew dozens of sketches before producing the final painting. Many of these are on display at the Reina Sofía Museum.

The cultural institution also houses three important works by Dalí:

  • The Face of the Great Masturbator: his most autobiographical work.)
  • Girl at the Window: a quasi-realistic portrait of his sister Anna Maria
  • Portrait of Luis Buñuel: which leans towards realism without completely abandoning cubism.

Other notable works include Naipes y dados ( Georges Braque), La mesa del músico (Juan Gris), La tertulia del Café de Pombo ( José Gutiérrez Solana) and El Cristo de la Sangre (Ignacio Zuloaga), although the list could be longer.

The visit was enriching, but better signage inside the museum would facilitate the experience.
