How to Get to Segovia from Madrid

Just over 60 kilometres from the capital, Segovia is a tourist destination in its own right. You're sure to have heard about the charm of its historic centre, its impressive aqueduct and its gastronomy that leaves no one indifferent. So, if you already know almost everything there is to see and do in Madrid, it might be a very good idea to visit this Castilian city.

If you want to get to know the city, in this post I will tell you the best ways to get there from Madrid. The two cities are very well connected, so whatever your travel situation you will find the perfect means of transport for you. You can choose between several organised tours that show you the best of the city, or go on your own with a rented car, by bus or by train. I'll give you the keys to make the trip you've imagined a reality.

If you want to enjoy Segovia without worrying about organising the routes, itineraries, means of transport and reservations, the best option is to hire an organised tour from Madrid.

There are several possibilities for excursions to Segovia that are worthwhile, depending on the time you have and the route you are most interested in. For example, you can combine your trip to Segovia with tours of two nearby cities, such as Toledo or Ávila, to make the most of your time.

These tours usually include a pick-up service with private transport and a guide who explains the most interesting parts of the places you pass through, although they do not usually offer food, but suggest a place or area in the destination city where you can eat. Some tours propose a meeting point in Madrid to leave directly from the city instead of picking up passengers at various hotels, check the conditions carefully.

The advantage of this option is that they do all the planning, so you can relax and enjoy the day in the city. And they are not bad value for money: the price range (depending on which one you choose, of course) goes from 30 to 50 euros approximately.

Option 1: If you're short on time, take a day trip to Segovia and the historic centre of Madrid

Some tours condense what you can 't miss in both destinations into a one-day trip. They usually start with a guided tour of historic Madrid and then travel by bus to Segovia. There you take a walk through the centre: the steep streets, the aqueduct, the Cathedral... Everything is well explained so that you don't have any doubts.

It is clear that both Segovia and Madrid have much more to offer than what we can see in a few hours, but this proposal is interesting and is very well thought out to squeeze the day in a productive way. If you only have a few days in this area, it is an interesting option: in a full day, you go to Segovia and return to Madrid. Of course, with a full camera.

Option 2: If you want to make the most of your time, take a trip to Segovia from Madrid with a stop in Ávila

A very popular route is the one that stops in the city of Avila on the way to Segovia. Before arriving in the city of the aqueduct, the guide has already shown you the most tourist attractions of this beautiful old city: the trip usually includes monuments such as the walls of Avila, the Cathedral, the Convent of Santa Teresa and the Basilica of San Vicente.

Once in Segovia, the journey continues: this city has a lot to offer. The route will depend on the tour you choose, but almost all of them include the Cathedral and the Alcázar of Segovia, a walk through the historic centre and, of course, the impressive aqueduct.

Option 3: If you don't want to miss the jewel of the Tagus, a trip to Segovia and Toledo from Madrid

A tripto Toledo, a tourist destination in itself, is always worthwhile. If you prefer to take advantage of your trip to Segovia to get to know it, this is another city with an adequate size so that you can visit it together in one day. Both cities have also been declared UNESCO World Heritage Sites, so these tours offer a great day out.

Combined tours usually include a guided tour of the most important sights and time to wander around the historic centre. Many also include entrance to the Alcázar and Toledo Cathedral, so prices sometimes vary. It is a good idea to get a first impression of both cities.

If you like to drive and go at your own pace, Segovia is a perfect distance from Madrid for a day trip by car. In Madrid you have many options available to rent the car of your choice and the main car rental companies, such as Herz, Europcar or Avis, among others.

Car rental centres are usually close to the busiest stations or city centres, such as Atocha, but not only: of course, you can also access a vehicle in other parts of the city. The price for a weekend starts at around 40 euros, although what you pay varies greatly depending on the car you choose.

If you have just arrived at Madrid airport, you can hire a car there to start your journey (and if you want to get from the airport to Madrid, here's the best way).

If you enjoy driving, I recommend you do this route by car. The road through the Sierra de Guadarrama is very beautiful, and with this option you can stop at intermediate points along the way. Some of them are really worthwhile, such as El Escorial.

• Price: The price to rent a car depends a lot on the car you choose. I recommend that you check online where your nearest car rental office is and what vehicles are available for the dates of your trip. As a guideline, think that the minimum price for a weekend is from approximately 40 euros.
• Travel time: The journey by road from Madrid to Segovia takes about an hour and a quarter on the A6.

If you don't feel like driving, you can easily reach Segovia from Madrid by bus. Buses leave from Moncloa station in Madrid and take about an hour and a half to reach Segovia.

The advantage of this option is that it is very economical (it costs approximately 5 euros each way) and can be direct: there are two types of travel for this route. Between the direct service and the service with a stop there is only a 5 minute difference.

Moreover, it is an option that makes things very easy for you because there are plenty of buses available: at least one every hour and at some times of the day, two buses per hour. Segovia's bus station is at Paseo Ezequiel González number 20, in the southern part of the city. You can walk to the centre.

If you like to travel by train, there are two options for the journey from Madrid to Segovia, and keep an eye out because the journey varies greatly depending on which one you choose.

The Ave: fast and comfortable, but it does not reach the city centre

The high-speed train arrives in Segovia from Madrid Chamartín station in less than half an hour. Prices vary according to demand and the time of purchase: you can find tickets for around 12 euros, but they may not go below 23 euros for the day or time you are interested in.

It is a direct and comfortable journey, with several trains available every hour, the only drawback is that the AVE station in Segovia (Segovia- GUIOMAR) is 6 kilometres away from the city.

So to get to the city centre, once in Segovia station you have to take another means of transport. You have two options: take a bus line 11or a taxi. The bus journey takes about 20 minutes and costs about 2 euros. By taxi it is quicker: it takes only 10 minutes and the fare is around 7 euros.

• Price: AVE prices vary, so depending on when you travel you can pay between 11 and 23 euros approximately, per person per journey. To this you have to add about 2 euros for the bus line 11 that takes you to the centre of Segovia, or the 7 euros or so it costs for a taxi.
• Journeytime: Half an hour.

Regional train: slower, but to a central station

The regional train takes two hours to get from Madrid to Segovia. There are not many available: about two a day, one in the morning and one in the afternoon.

It is an economical means of transport (it costs about 7 euros round trip with the tourist fare), but if you plan to spend the day it is not the most efficient. However, if you enjoy the journey, the train stops at all the stations in the mountains of Madrid: Villalba, Cercedilla, Espinar...

It leaves from Chamartín station in Madrid and arrives at the old train station in Segovia, from where only medium-distance journeys are made. The advantage is that the station is in the city centre, on Calle Obispo Quesada, with immediate bus connections to get around the city (or even leave to start your journey in Segovia directly on foot).

This route is mainly designed for people travelling from Madrid to the Sierra. To get to Segovia, the journey can be tiring with so many stops. I advise you to take one of the other options I have mentioned.
