More about: Barcelona Moco Museum Tickets and Visits

In 2021, the Moco museum opened its doors and joined the long list of Barcelona's best museums. This museum of modern and contemporary art, hence its acronym, belongs to Kim and Lionel Logchies, a Dutch couple of collectors who have already opened a branch of Moco in Amsterdam. The museum is housed in a former 18th century Gothic palace and houses all kinds of 20th and 21st century works. A very interesting mix of history and modernity.

Its collection includes works by such renowned artists as Andy Warhol, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Banksy and Salvador Dalí. If you are a lover of modern art, it is a must-see and one of the best things to do in Barcelona. In this post I'll share with you everything you need to know to get your tickets and all the information you need to get to know the Moco Museum in Barcelona as it deserves.

The price of tickets to the Moco Museum in Barcelona may vary depending on the dates and time slot. But these are the basic prices for the museum:

    • Adult ticket (over 17 years old): From 14,50€
    • Student ticket (with student card): From €9.50
    • Youth ticket (10-17 years): From €9.50

These prices are subject to variation as there are differences between these rates, depending on whether they are purchased online or at the ticket offices. They also vary depending on the time of year, demand and even the time of day.

My recommendation is to always get them online and in advance to find better prices.

The museum itself offers guided tours, but using audio guides. To answer the question of whether it's worth it, yes.

Modern art is sometimes difficult to understand, but with the audio guide explanations you won't have that problem. They are available in Spanish, Catalan, Dutch, English, German, French, Italian and Spanish and are included in the ticket price.

There are also tours for large groups. Discounts are available for groups of 16 or more. To book this type of visit, please contact the museum by email: barcelona@mocomuseum.com.

There are two ways to buy tickets for the Moco museum in Barcelona: online or at the museum ticket office. In this case it is best, in almost all cases, to buy them online.

Mainly because online tickets from the museum's website always come with a discount and ensure that you don't have to queue and are available at the times you choose.

At the ticket office, ticket prices usually have a surcharge of approximately 2 euros.

It should be added that the Moco museum is not currently included in the Barcelona museum pass, but the Picasso museum on the same street is.

The Moco Museum is located at Carrer de Montcada 25, in the centre of Barcelona. If you've taken a tour of the Gothic Quarter you've almost certainly seen its façade.

For reference, it is on the same street as the Picasso Museum and less than 10 minutes walk from points of interest such as the Basilica of Santa Maria del Mar and Barcelona Cathedral.

Using the best ways to get around Barcelona you can reach the Moco in the following ways:

    • By metro: the nearest stop is Jaume I, a ten-minute walk to the museum.
    • By bus: lines V15 and H16 stop at Plaça de Catalunya. From this point it is just over 10 minutes on foot.
    • If you are in the city centre, it is always best to go on foot as it is close to some of the city's nerve centres such as Las Ramblas and Plaça Catalunya.
    • By car it is difficult as there is not much parking nearby. There are paid car parks near the France train station and the museum is less than a 10-minute walk from there.

Is it advisable to go to the Moco Museum in Barcelona with children?

Of course it is. In fact the museum is very oriented to young people, especially teenagers.

It is a place very focused on social networks and young people tend to come to share the experience on networks like instagram. This is an important part of its audience.

As for the youngest visitors, the museum is very visual and easy to see, so the visit is usually very enjoyable for them. In this sense, it could be one of the best activities to do with children in Barcelona.

The prices also help, as children under 9 years old don't pay admission and between 10 and 17 years old there is always a discount.

The collection of the Moco Museum is not very extensive, but it has works of great value and very structured.

In total there are about 40 pieces divided into five blocks plus temporary exhibitions. The highlights you can see at the Moco Museum in Barcelona are:

    • In the Moco Master - Modern block you will find works by pioneering and well-known artists such as Jean-Michel Basquiat and Damien Hirst.
    • Another block is the Moco Master - Contemporary. Here we find the creations of the most modern and contemporary artists such as Kaws, David LaChapelle or the Barcelona-born Yago Hortal
    • The anonymous artist Bansky has his own space. This space dedicated to the artist has, in addition to some works, a recreation of his studio and explanatory areas of some of his most famous works such as the Girl with a Balloon.
    • There is another space dedicated to immersive art. These are digital works in large spaces in which the viewer is immersed in the work itself. The Diamond Matrix is the most famous of these works and the most popular on the networks.
    • The last area of the museum is dedicated to temporary exhibitions, so depending on the dates you visit, you can find different exhibitions. This space has hosted exhibitions on NFT or works by the artist Kaws.

The Moco museum is small compared to most museums in Barcelona. However, although there are no more than 50 works, it is very well organised and the visit is very enjoyable. If you go quickly, you can see the whole collection in half an hour.

If you stop and pay more attention to the works and their explanations, the tour takes about 60 minutes. This depends on the speed at which you want to visit, but my recommendation is to spend at least 1 hour.

    • Monday to Friday: 9:00 to 20:00.
    • Saturday to Sunday: 9:00 to 22:00.

Remember that visits are by time slot and you will have to book the visit at a specific time, with about 15 minutes to arrive from the agreed time. If you arrive after this time, there is no guarantee that you will be able to enter the museum. Remember that tickets are sold at the ticket office until one hour before closing time.

Since the Moco museum works a bit differently from other museums in Barcelona, here are some tips to keep in mind if you visit it:

    • Tickets are available in time slots, usually 1 hour from opening to closing.
    • If you want to see the museum as quiet as possible, the best time is early in the morning and if you can choose during the week.
    • It is preferable to buy your tickets online, as they are subject to a small discount.
    • You are allowed to take photos as long as you don't obstruct the passage of people.
    • Whether you bring large bags or trolleys, the museum has a cloakroom service.
    • The Moco Museum has a community for modern art lovers and if you join you get discounts on tickets and in the museum shop.

The Moco Museum has both a physical shop and an online shop. They have their own merchandising which includes their own line of clothing with their slogan "In art we Trust" and a multitude of accessories such as mobile phone cases, backpacks, notebooks, etc. They also sell postcards and posters of the museum's works as well as books on art.

In the Barcelona museum, the shop is located in the inner courtyard that leads to the museum's collection, next to the first work on display. A giant wooden statue by the sculptor Kaws.

Where to eat near the Moco Museum in Barcelona

Luckily the museum is in an area full of bars and restaurants to complete a day of art with a gastronomic tour of Barcelona. On Carrer del Moco itself there are several restaurants and bars serving tapas, Basque, Catalan and many others.

Nearby is also the Passeig del Born, where you can find many other places to eat. In the area there are typical taverns and after-dinner cocktail bars.

A little more than 5 minutes away is the Santa Caterina market, where there are several places where you can try some of the best products. As you can see, there is no shortage of options in the area around the Moco museum, and the Gothic quarter where it is located is a gastronomic hub for all tastes and budgets.

The experience was great, but it would be better if they extended the opening hours for some attractions.
